Edward Shane, Sr. became the owner of America ’s oldest candy store in 1911. The founder of the Shane Candy Company would be proud to know that the store has been fortunate to become a Philadelphia treasure still manufacturing and selling handcrafted chocolates today. The store is located in the historic Olde City district of Philadelphia and operates out of a revolutionary war period building. Originally, the site was a printing company and was converted into a candy operation in 1876. With chocolates being prepared on the upper three floors, the historic candy store on the first floor has retained its old-fashioned charm through the preservation of the original mahogany woodwork, mother-of-pearl counter tops, tin-pressed ceiling, gas lamp light fixtures, and stained-glass windows.

      While the Olde City district has experienced eras of significant change, Shane Candies has taken great pride in preserving its time-tested recipes and methods of old-fashioned candymaking. On the second floor of the four-story building, the chocolates are cooked in small batches enabling us to take extra care and attention for each piece of candy made. Many of the original copper kettles and stirring utensils are still in use with the stoves and tables on the second floor in their original positions. Rather than utilizing the readily available premanufactured mixes as done by the majority of present day confectioners, we have preserved our original handcrafted method of making candy using only the finest and most basic natural ingredients without any preservatives.

      The Shane Candy Company has become a Philadelphia tradition and has been fortunate to receive a variety of awards, honors and acknowledgements throughout its history. We have been featured on the Food Network twice and have received the “Best Of” award for chocolate candies. Specifically featured in the show was our best-selling vanilla butter creams. In addition, the beauty of the candy store has been acknowledged by the Philadelphia Business Proprietor’s Association awarding Shane Candies for having the “Best Window of Philadelphia” for four out of the last six holiday season competitions. In late 2004 Shane’s was honored by a Philadelphia institution older than itself when the Philadelphia Stock Exchange asked the third generation owner, Barry Shane, to perform the monthly salutation of ringing the exchange’s Liberty Bell to initiate the trading day.
